At end of october we could observe this beautiful sunset in Riesa. During sunset the light of the sun let the clouds appear in many different colors.
Sometimes it is possible to also see northern lights in Germany. Informations about this you can find at www.polarlicht-vorhersage.de. This picture of northern lights was taken in Finland. To have a better chance to see northern lights it is good to travel to the northern parts of europe. Here you also have the chance to see some even during weak activity.

This semester, the new children’s university doctors were awarded.
In March 2016 one could observe an aurora in Riesa. With the eye, although difficult to detect but with the camera clearly. From time to time it can be seen even an aurora, while you have to keep the solar activity well in mind. The picture was taken on the Reußner mountain.
This year we will offer a lot of new and exciting things at the observatory Riesa. Presentations, events and observations about astronomy and space flight. We will also continue with the expansion of our observatory.
In December 2015, the new platform without barries was built around the observatory. Now any visitor can go comfortably in the observatory.
The wonderful complete lunar eclipse was on the 28th of september 2015. At this day was good weather in riesa and the we can observed this special event.
On this picture you can see NCL Clouds with a bright meteor
On the 30th of June, 2015 the narrowest meeting of both bright planets was to be observed and both approached up to 0. 3 °, so less than 1 lunar diameter in the sky. A spectacular and extremely rare sight. Already in the day sky the planet pair in the blue sky could be discovered. Long before these were to be seen with the naked eye, one could see in the telescopes both planets. The special in it: one looks by the telescope with strong enlargement (50 – 130x) and could marvel at at two planets from the first sight in the eyepiece. There is this extremely seldom and only at such narrow meetings. To take both planets successively in the visor, is often the case and stood with observations of the last months in the observatory of Riesa firmly in the plan. However, to see from the first sight immediately 2 planets and in addition still both brightest in the eyepiece – THERE NEVER WAS THIS!
In May this image could be shot by one of our members. In this rare case a blackbird could be photographed at her nightly serenades. Behind the blackbrid the moon is shing. A very convincing picture.
In March a lot of people could observe the partial eclipse over Germany. Three people from the observatory Riesa could see the total eclipse from a plane. On the picture you can the sun a short moment before it is completely covered by the moon.
Schoolclass visited the obeservatory in Riesa, Germany.
At November it all started. After a lot of organisation the observatory could move to the new location. At this day we could not observe astronomical objects but a flying observatory.
The biggest sunspot on the sun’s surface since a couple of years. It’s big as the planet Jupiter.
In the Kennedy Space centre can you visit the Space shuttle Atlantis which Era the shuttle flights finished.
Also this year the Starfriends riesa could observe a lot of falling stars at the Perseid nights. Even the moon was shining very bright.
Abig fire took place in mid-April on our star, the sun, from, because at the solar limb could watch wonderful gas outbursts and in the afternoon a violent eruption occurred. Since days watching members of the observatory huge sunspot groups on the photosphere of the sun. These are known for over 400 years and represent especially strong magnetic solar activity.
An observation of Earth Hour 2014. For 60 minutes the lights went out around the world to make a mark. The observatory Riesa participated in this action and used the dark hour for an extensive observation with the 11-inch telescope.
At the end of February the star friends of Riesa were able to observe the phenomenon of northern lights. Although the aurora was just to see photographically, it shows quite beautiful structures. Auroras are caused by the so-called solar wind, which hurls the sun during outbreaks on the surface into space. If these charged particles hit on the Earths atmosphere, they excite the air molecules to glow.
Large sunspots as the sunspot group NOAA 11944 are of particular interest because they show very complex structures and thus reveal much about the solar magnetic field at this point. The group 1944 is classified as one of the greatest of the last 10 years and was about 200 000km long. If this creates strong eruptions, as in the evening of the January, there is great excitement at sun fans, because the chance of visible aurora is also increasing for the central European region.
In December, the Star Friends Riesa have again held their annual end of the year observation – the Astro-Glühwein night. The guests were able to talk with the star friends and observe during some warm drink. Since it was not completely cloudy that night, objects like the Orion Nebula, Jupiter and the moon could be observed. Against the cold and for a short warm up there was a small wood stove.
In winter is the best time to observe the planetary nebula M42 in star sign Orion. Such a nebula is the birthplace of new stars. The Orion nebula is in a distance of 1350 lightyears from the sun. When the weather is fine you can see it with your own eyes.
Also this year the falling star nights take place at the airfield in Canitz. Every evening at 10 pm from the 11th to the 18th august the observers move to the observation location and start the falling star hunting. Over 1000 falling stars were counted in this week. In the night with the highest falling star rate we could observe 280 meteors. In the next year this event will take place again at this time.
This Year the 8th STT Saxonian Telescope Starparty takes place at the youth hostel of Strehla. In this great location around a old windmill we invitet astronomers and naturefans to visit us one weekend. There where many kinds of telescopes at the STT and the biggest was from a astromer from Kiel with 30 inch of diameter. Also our 20 inch telescope giant was there and together with all the other guests we enjoy many hours of starhopping and deep sky observation in the nightsky. On Saturday there were also many speeches and reports of special interests and acitvities from other communities and clubs and so we all knew about each other and starts a familiar friendship with further clubs. The next STT will take place from july 25th – july 27th in 2014 at Youth hostel Strehla. Come and visit us like members from Austria and all parts of Germany.

The observatory Riesa will continue to remain active in the service of astronomy and popular astronomy and youth education . A new location for this important institution is found . Old and especially many new partners are firmly behind our goals , ideas and resources.
The gas giant Jupiter , the largest planet in the solar system , is currently can be see in at the evening sky and the whole night through . With cloud bands , storms and 4 large moons of this planet is an impressive and attractive object for each telescope . Particularly in large telescopes , such as the observatory Riesa , detailed structures and motions of the planets can be observed .
In the Feueradgalaxie M101 can currently be observed a supernova . The galaxy is 24 million light years away.

In July 2011, the last space shuttle launch took place in the US . Some members visit this special event.
On 15 June 2011, the total lunar eclipse took place in the evenings! Unfortunately, barring a thick cloud band visibility at 11:00 p.m . But after that happy guests and members of the observatory Riesa can be see a dark red moon.
In April, the sun came out again populated by sunspots . These sunspots are Huge material discharge points on our star. best
On March 27, this year’s Earth Hour took place, where the light has been turned off for 60 minutes. Worldwide, the light was on many buildings turned of and send a signal against the disappointing outcome of the Copenhagen climate conference. Also in the observatory Riesa all lights were put off for one hour.
While astronomy week, many school classes visited the observatory Riesa. They learn much new about astronomy and to observatory.
Member Pfof.Dr. Babara Cunow visited the spider exhibition in the observatory Riesa .
This image is from the last STT , which took place this year at the Youth Hostel Strehla . It was a successful meeting with many telescopes and visitors . Three days with relatively good weather observation and abundant astronomical professional discussions . Mor pictures are in the gallary.
This picture was taken moment during the preparation of an observation on the airfield in Canitz . The special thing about this picture is that you can see in the afterglow no single Kondenztreifen an aircraft.
This image is a very beautiful mosaic of the sun in the so-called . H – alpha light , that the wavelength of the light spectrum , in which the gas outbreaks. surface activity are very nice to watch .
In January, the correct time was again observed around Mars . At the low temperatures in January ( as in this picture that was taken at -10 ° C ) that is flickering so low that you can look at Mars through the telescope with larger magnifications in the air.
As in the best weather conditions in addition to the sun , we had the moon a focus of investigations at noon on November 12 , this impressive sight was even provided with a cherry on top : an aircraft strike the edge of the moon !
On September 17, a historic moment in space took place . The Japanese HTV transport module docked for the first time at the ISS . From the observatory Riesa we have this moment firmly retained . You see in the picture the HTV at a distance of about 150 meters to the ISS .
In August, we could observe a solar transit of the ISS from the observatory . This event could be observed in a only 5 km wide strip on Earth . The observatory is us this sharp image of the ISS succeeded .
On 22 July this year, you could watch the longest solar eclipse of this century , almost 6 min in Asia . Darkness. Also two of our team members were on site and provided many impressions of this unique event . This image is a small impression.
