Venus and Jupiter

On the 30th of June, 2015 the narrowest meeting of both bright planets was to be observed and both approached up to 0. 3 °, so less than 1 lunar diameter in the sky. A spectacular and extremely rare sight. Already in the day sky the planet pair in the blue sky could be discovered. Long before these were to be seen with the naked eye, one could see in the telescopes both planets. The special in it: one looks by the telescope with strong enlargement (50 – 130x) and could marvel at at two planets from the first sight in the eyepiece. There is this extremely seldom and only at such narrow meetings. To take both planets successively in the visor, is often the case and stood with observations of the last months in the observatory of Riesa firmly in the plan. However, to see from the first sight immediately 2 planets and in addition still both brightest in the eyepiece – THERE NEVER WAS THIS!

Monthly Picture February 2014

February 2014

At the end of February the star friends of Riesa were able to observe the phenomenon of northern lights. Although the aurora was just to see photographically, it shows quite beautiful structures. Auroras are caused by the so-called solar wind, which hurls the sun during outbreaks on the surface into space. If these charged particles hit on the Earths atmosphere, they excite the air molecules to glow.

Monthly Picture January 2014

January 2014

Large sunspots as the sunspot group NOAA 11944 are of particular interest because they show very complex structures and thus reveal much about the solar magnetic field at this point. The group 1944 is classified as one of the greatest of the last 10 years and was about 200 000km long. If this creates strong eruptions, as in the evening of the January, there is great excitement at sun fans, because the chance of visible aurora is also increasing for the central European region.
